Sony Playstation Portable goes Online ?

According to this article on PCWorld.com the psp is set to go online next week with a new software upgrade. Previously users had not been able to legitimately get onto the internet with a with the PSP. When i say “legitimately” what i mean is without installing an unsigned software upgrade which could damage your PSP’s hardware and isn’t really worth the risk in my opinion.

The browser included in the new Sony update will allow access to most website and parses/reads HTML 4.01. There will be an icon installed onto the PSP desktop for easy access - and the browser will (obviously) use WiFi to connect to your default hotspot.

Also announced was that there will be an icy cool new white PSP. I wonder how many black users will turn to the new iPod-esque white version ? The new version was announced to cost exactly the same as the black version ($220) and comes in the same package. The newly coloured console debuts in Japan on September 15th.

New Metal Gear title “Metal Gear Acid” announced for PSP launch !

It seems that the very popular Metal Gear series of games is coming to the PSP ! The announcement was made by Konami of Europe the company which makes the Metal Gear games and it is due to go on sale at the official launch of the Sony PSP on September 1st.

The game wll be card based - according to our news source, and will revolve a character whos skills are changed/altered by the cards you collect. As you progress through the game more cards are made available - so it is sort of an RPG where stats (in a sense) can be achieved. The game revolves around a secret development codenamed “Pythagoras” and Snake (the main character from previous games) is sent in to acquire and discover what Pythagoras is - before terrorists who are demanding it in exchange for the next US president who they hold hostage.

All in all it looks to be an interesting game and definately should be a hit with previous Metal Gear fans.

Sony PSP games hacked

Unfortunately hackers have decided to target the PSP games by hacking PSP titles manfuactured on UMD so that they can be “ripped” and then played directly from the memory card using the so called “Code loader hack”. The titles that have been effected by this are:

  • Lumines
  • Mercury
  • Coded Arms
  • Puzzle Bobble
  • Intelligent License.

Whilst the people using these hacks think they are getting a good deal and a bargain - and one up on the manufacturers. Which they probably are in the short term they are also hindering the development of further titles for the PSP which surely is bad for everyone ?
